Old Hickory Lake Guide Service Fishing Report 05/26/2019

Posted by ian on May 26, 2019

Old Hickory has had a good spring so far producing good bags of fish and plenty of numbers. As the summer progresses more and more fish will disappear off the banks and fisherman will grow more and more frustrated as the majority of the fish will be behind them as they fish the bank.  We have hit the time of year when a lot of anglers will begin to loose the fish as they move offshore and inhabit the deeper, cooler, more oxygenated waters of the creek and river ledges. The weather looks hot and stable over the next week the water temperatures will continue to climb and hopefully will improve the deep bite. Water temperatures on the river and creeks have been in the mid-high 70’s with the clarity being good.  The COE have cut back the generations pretty considerably over the last week.

Over the last several weeks we have seen more and more fish showing up off shore everyday and the best has yet to come. Creek drops and creek channels have been very productive for us lately along with some river ledges. I foresee the river ledges becoming a bigger player over the next week as the fish continue to search for cooler more oxygenated waters. We have been using a variety of baits to catch ledge fish including 6XD crankbaits in natural colors, jigs, 10in worms, C-rig creature baits and big shakey heads all in green pumpkin or close variants.

Other then the ledges we have been fishing secondary points in creeks, main lake points and channel banks. Fish use creek channels as their main travel highways and a channel banks is a good stop for them. The bank gives fish a place to hide while waiting to ambush prey along with easy access to deep water with minimal effort. Secondary points often times are good recouping places after the fish come off bed and can hold a considerable amount of fish this time of year. A wide variety of baits can be productive this time of year and sometimes you have to cycle through several before finding something the fish will eat.

At OHGS we offer fully guided fishing trips for bass and crappie using the latest and greatest from sponsors like Lews, Strike King, Vicious, Eco Pro Tungsten, Engel Coolers, Simms Gear and Riverside Marine. I am a USCG licensed captain, fully insured and 100 % committed to making your day the most memorable day on the water!
