Old Hickory Lake Fishing Report 06/03/2013

Had a trip with Brad yesterday focusing on ledge fishing. Brad wanted to try and learn how to read a map and what too look for when looking offshore. We did alot of riding and talking about why certain drops look better and why certain drops weren't holding fish. The fish on Old Hickory right now are extremely scattered and its hard to find a consistent pattern. You are able to catch fish offshore right now but it can be tough because the numbers just aren't out there yet. While we didn't catch any monster fish today Brad was able to learn what to look for so he can relate it to when he's out by himself and find fish. Look for the fish to move out and and begin to group up on drops. Monday night tournament out of Davis Corner took 7 lbs to win with almost 30 boats.

Had a good time today up on the fish tank at Bass Pro in Nashville doing a seminar on choosing the right rod for the right application. Although it was a Friday there were plenty of people there buying all kinds of things and people always get a kick out of watching baits in the tank. Go check out Bass Pro Shops next time you need to put a little something new in the  tackle box. Their selection is second to none and they carry colors and baits that you can't find anywhere else locally.

Got out today to look for some fish for an upcoming tournament this weekend. Today was much better than the last several. We got off the bank and fished deeper then we have been and it sure paid off. In about the first 1.5 hrs we had a limit of around 15 lbs w a 19 in smallmouth!!! We caught several fish throughout the day with the smallmouth being the highlight of the day. We decided to fish a Tuesday night tournament considering we found some fish. On blast off my glasses flew off my head and luckly landed in the washout well by the motor. We should have taken that as a sign and loaded the boat on the trailer but we didnt. In the first hour of fishing we lost 3 fish that would have went 12 lbs due to breakoffs and 2  that jumped off. Needless to say we didn't fininsh well. Took little over 9lbs to win which we had with just 2 of the fish that we lost. All fish today were caught in 15-20 fow on jigs, t-rigged plastics and Spro Little John DD crankbaits.

Well I decided to fish a tournament Sunday morning because we found a few fish on Saturday afternoon on a little deeper pattern that should have stayed around. Well wouldn't you know it we could not catch a fish on the several spots we found them the day before. My morning should have told me to give up when my partner stuck me in the back of the head with a small Bandit crankbait. OUCH!!! Then several hrs later just after he put sunscreen on his hands he stuck me in the back of the arm AGAIN with a small Bandit crankbait. First time he has stuck me and he did it twice in one day!!! Our fishing day was not terrible as we caught fish but just could not find the big ones. I think all the boat traffic killed our bite as it was crazy busy in Station Camp and Spencer Creek. Made it difficult to fish offshore stuff we had found the day before. All fish were caught on c-rig and texas rigged plastics, Spro DD Little John crankbaits, small crankbaits, and frogs.

Fished a small tournament today on the lower end of the lake and boy was it TOUGH!!! What a turn around it was today from yesterday with the pattern we found yesterday totally nonexistent today.  We were able to catch several fish throughout the day but just could not find any good size. I think a big wave of fish have gone on bed making the bite in the lower end tough. All fish today were caught on shakey heads, crankbaits, texas rigged brush hogs and spinnerbaits. Hopefully some of the post-spawn fish will begin to move out to points and the first drops and start eating.

011.JPGHad a couple hours this afternoon free so I decided to call up a friend and hit the lower end of the lake. Fished around in weed beds and caught a bunch of fish but were not the quality that we were looking for. Decided to change it up a little and found a productive pattern which produced several good fish including this one that weight 4.12.  All fish today were caught on jigs, texas rigged plastics and crankbaits.

Got out yesterday for a little fun fishing and also for a 3 hr evening tournament. And for the first time this year I can say that we got HOT!!! If you got out of the wind for any extended period of time boy was it uncomfortable but not complaining glad to see summer may finally be here. Caught fish throughout the day with several over 2 lb and one over 3lb. We found that the fish are pretty scattered and not really concentrated on one specific pattern. Seems like you can catch fish out of 1ft of water then turn around and catch them out of 20 ft. The more consistant bite for us has definatly been a little deeper in 10-20 fow. We caught fish on jigs, c-rig, crankbaits, dd crankbait and spinnerbaits. Fishing overall seemed to be pretty tough for everyone we talked to. We ended up placing tied for 4th in the tournament last night w/ 6.5lb and a little over 7lb winning.  Look for some of these fish to be moving out to the first drops and little deeper water which should provide a little more consistent bite.

Got out again today with Brad to try our luck fishing another tournament. The fishing was definitely better today with a strong south wind and a little more stable conditions. We caught fish all day and were able to cull several times throughout the day. Just like yesterday Brad found another donkey weighing 5.45. Though he got beat out of big fish by .5 oz it was the kicker fish we needed to WIN !!! We have had an awesome two days fishing and I look forward to our next trip together. Fish were caught on crankbaits, jigs, texas rigged plastics and topwater. The fishing should only keep improving over the next several weeks with alot of fish coming off bed and looking to eat. Call today to come out and enjoy a great day on the water.

Got out today with Brad for a 6 hr trip that he wanted to finish off the trip with a tournament. Brads main goal today was to learn basic early spring bass patterns and effective ways to fish them. Throughout the day Brad and I looked around alot and discussed why fish would or would not be in specific areas and also ways to fish spots were bass were likely to be. We got on the water about noon and immediately caught several fish on a shallow crankbait. The bite was pretty slow the rest of the day as the cold front and bluebird skies had the fish feeling a little lethargic. We were able to catch fish throughout the day but just not the quality or quantity that we had been. But when it came tournament time Brad was ready. He caught his personal best of 6 lbs on his third cast and boated the other 2 fish that we ended up weighing in!!!  We ended up catching enough weight to place 2nd overall in the tournament. And I have to apologize for not getting any pictures as we were pretty focused on the tournament.

We were able to get out for a few hours yesterday with a couple friends wanting to catch some fish on top water. In about 4 hrs we were able to boat multiple fish including a 3lb and 4.5 lber. I was waiting on my buddies to get to the ramp when I caught the fish I'am holding so had to do the best I could for the picture. The top water bite is improving daily and should for the next little while. Lets go catch em!!!
